About the position
Estimator - Summerset West
Engineering Manufacturing
This is not a spreadsheet-only estimating role.
We are an engineering manufacturer that makes real things. Components, assemblies, parts that get machined, fabricated, fitted and built on a shop floor. We are looking for an Estimator who understands how things are actually made, not just how they look on paper.
If you come from a toolmaking, machining, fitting, or hands-on engineering background and enjoy breaking drawings down into materials, processes, time and cost, this role will feel familiar.
What you will actually do
You will take engineering drawings and turn them into accurate, buildable, commercially sound estimates.
That means:
- Reading and understanding technical drawings and specifications
- Working out how parts will be manufactured, machined, fabricated or assembled
- Calculating realistic material, labour, machine time, tooling and overhead costs
- Questioning drawings or assumptions that do not make sense from a production point of view
- Working closely with engineering, production and procurement to validate costs
- Supporting quotations, RFQs and project pricing with solid technical logic
- Maintaining estimating data, cost models and historical pricing
- Handing over clean, well thought through estimates to production teams
This role sits at the intersection of engineering and commercial decision-making. Your numbers matter and people rely on them.
What we are looking for
We care far more about technical credibility than fancy titles.
Ideally, you will have:
- A strong technical background in engineering manufacturing
- Trade experience such as toolmaking, fitting, machining or similar is highly valued
- The ability to read and interpret technical drawings with confidence
- Experience estimating or costing in an engineering or manufacturing environment
- A solid understanding of how things are made on a shop floor
- Strong numerical and analytical skills
- Confidence to challenge assumptions and ask the right technical questions
- The ability to explain costs clearly to engineers and non-engineers alike
What will suit you
- You like accuracy and taking ownership of your work
- You prefer realistic, buildable solutions over theoretical ones
- You enjoy working closely with engineers and production teams
- You understand that bad estimates create real problems downstream
- You take pride in getting it right, not just getting it done fast
The environment
This is an engineering-led manufacturing business. Decisions are practical, grounded and production-focused. You will be dealing with people who know the shop floor and expect estimates to reflect reality.
If you understand how things are made and enjoy turning drawings into numbers that actually work, you will fit in well.
Desired Skills:
- Technical Drawings
- Attention to Detail
- Analytical Thinking
