About the position
Our client, a leading Environmental Consulting company based in KwaZulu, is looking to fill the position of Environmental and Mine Closure Scientist.
Purpose of the Role:
As a consultant in the mine closure, rehabilitation and land management division, the successful incumbent, will play a pivotal role in guiding the clients through the strategic planning and execution of mine closure projects. Leveraging on their expertise in environmental management, the successful incumbent will contribute to the development of comprehensive mine closure and rehabilitation plans, risk assessments and associated mine closure liability estimates to mitigate environmental impacts and restore ecosystems, ensuring compliance with regulations and industry best practice. In addition, to support the company's Environmental Services Division with EIAs, IWUL applications, environmental auditing and compliance monitoring.
Key Responsibilities:
- Financial provision assessments / closure cost estimates (GN R 1147 and other relevant legislation).
- Environmental risk identification and management.
- Development of mine closure and rehabilitation plan(s).
- Initiate and complete environmental and social legislative processes to obtain relevant authorisations (Environmental Impact Assessments, Water Use Licencing, Waste Management Licences, etc.).
- Compile and write the required reports and other supporting documents for submission to our clients and relevant authorities.
- Conduct environmental compliance auditing.
- Conduct site assessments.
- Reporting progress on deliverables in accordance with project schedules.
- Assist with project management functions, including developing project schedules, invoicing, budget management, and proposal development.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Grade 12 Senior Certificate
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Management
- Post graduate degree in Environmental Management is beneficial
- Minimum 4-5 years' experience within the Environmental Consulting Sector
- Professional registration (EAPASA, SACNASP) is beneficial
- Proficient in MS Office, including MS Excel & MS Word
- Experience in managing projects and budgets
- Excellent report writing and presentation skills
- Good understanding of rehabilitation techniques and strong technical skills relating to rehabilitation implementation is beneficial
- Strong understanding of applicable mine closure and financial provisioning legislation and regulations and how the regulations are practically implemented is beneficial
- Strong numerical ability and excellent attention to detail
- Knowledge of GIS systems and modelling software (Global Mapper) is beneficial
