About the position
Background:
- The Vaccines and Infectious Diseases Analytics (VIDA) Research Unit of the University of the Witwatersrand, formerly RMPRU (Respiratory and Meningeal Pathogens Research Unit) has for over 20 years conducted numerous studies to assess the burden of and prevent vaccine-preventable diseases (VPD)
- Current studies and projects include infant rotavirus and BCG trials
Main Purpose of the Job:
- To provide best practice patient care and assessments to patients participating in clinical trials
Location:
- VIDA - Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital
Key Performance Areas:
- Screen patient files and identify potential patients for clinical trials
- Enrol participants by educating them about the study and obtain informed consent according to SOP's
- Complete relevant study documentation / questionnaires and checklists
- Perform vital signs
- Draw the necessary cord bloods, maternal bloods and vaginal swabs from patients and send samples or specimens to laboratory in accordance with study SOP’s
- Report and abnormality to Study Coordinators or Medical Officers
- Prepare sample packs (maternal packs, vaginal swabs, blood sample holders etc.) on a daily basis and ensure that the correct packs are used to collect the specimens
- Collect required data from participant medical records
- Record and maintain recruitment plans, including screening and enrolment logs on a daily basis
- Complete and file all relevant documentation (CRF’s, source documents etc.) in patient files
- Report on stats of participants recruited on a daily basis in the study handover book
- Shift handovers must be done in conjunction with the receiving shift leader and completed in the handover book before the start of each new shift
- Attend to data queries and resolve them accordingly
- Ensure all customer interaction (Both internal and external customers) is of the highest professional level
- Build and maintain authentic relationships with all stakeholders ensuring that all interactions are professional
Required Minimum Education and Training:
- Enrolled Nurse Certificate
Professional Body Registration:
- South African Nursing Council (SANC)
Required Minimum Work Experience:
- Minimum 1 year of nursing experience in clinical trials
Desirable Additional Education, Work Experience and Personal Abilities:
- Certification in Good Clinical Practice (GCP)
- Experience working in a research and Paediatric environment
- Ordered and systematic with strict compliance to protocols
- Tactful, respectful, and able to maintain confidentiality
- Good administrative skills, together with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Pro-active and adaptable
- Able to work under pressure and adhere to deadlines
- Self-motivated, able to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
Demands of the Job:
- Working overtime may be required from time to time
- Able to work with patients who are HIV positive and emotional because of the HIV disease
- Ability to work 12 hour shifts
