Enrolled Nurse – (12 Month Fixed Term Contract - Wits VIDA)

About the position

Background:

• The Vaccines and Infectious Diseases Analytics (VIDA) Research Unit of the University of the Witwatersrand, formerly RMPRU (Respiratory and Meningeal Pathogens Research Unit) has for over 20 years conducted numerous studies to assess the burden of and prevent vaccine-preventable diseases (VPD)
• Current studies and projects include infant rotavirus and BCG trials

Main purpose of the job:

• To provide best practice patient care and assessments to Patients participating in clinical trials

Location:

• VIDA - Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital

Key performance areas:

• Screen Patient files and identify potential Patients for clinical trials
• Enrol Participants by educating them about the study and obtaining informed consent according to SOPs
• Complete relevant study documentation/questionnaires and checklists
• Perform the maternal and baby's vital signs
• Draw the necessary specimens (cord bloods, maternal bloods, and vaginal swabs) from Patients and send samples or specimens to the laboratory in accordance with study SOP’s
• Report any abnormality to the Study Coordinators or Medical Officers
• Prepare sample packs (maternal packs, vaginal swabs, blood sample holders etc.) daily and ensure that the correct packs are used to collect the specimens
• Collect required data from Participant medical records
• Record and maintain recruitment plans, including screening and enrolment logs daily
• Complete and file all relevant documentation (CRF’s, source documents etc.) in Patient files
• Report on stats of Participants recruited on a daily basis in the study handover book
• Shift handovers must be done in conjunction with the Receiving Shift Leader and completed in the handover book before the start of each new shift
• Attend to data queries and resolve them accordingly
• Ensure all Customer interaction (both internal and external Customers) is of the highest professional level
• Build and maintain authentic relationships with all Sstakeholders ensuring that all interactions are professional
• Take ownership and accountability for tasks and demonstrates effective self management
• Follow through to ensure that quality and productivity standards of own work are consistently and accurately maintained
• Maintain a positive attitude and respond openly to feedback
• Take ownership for driving own career development in attending training and development sessions and relevant meetings

Required minimum education and training:

• Enrolled Nurse Certificate

Professional Body Registration:

• SANC Registration

Required minimum work experience:

• Minimum 1 year Nursing experience in Clinical Trials

Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:

• Certification in Good Clinical Practice (CGP)
• Experience working in a research and obstetric environment
• Ordered and systematic with strict compliance to protocols
• Tactful, respectful and maintain confidentiality
• Good administrative skills together with working knowledge of Microsoft Office
• Pro-active and adaptable
• Able to work under pressure and adhere to deadlines
• Self-motivated, able to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
• Working overtime may be required from time to time
• Able to work with pregnant women and their babies
• Able to travel to local clinics and hospitals around Soweto
