About the position
Our client requires a technically accomplished Embedded Architect to shape the architecture and long-term technical direction of connected telematics devices. The successful candidate will remain close to the technology, combining embedded software development, hardware review, vehicle connectivity, security and production engineering.
What You Will Do
- Own the architecture of embedded telematics platforms from processor and hardware selection through firmware and connectivity.
- Establish design standards, interfaces, architecture documentation and technical decision records.
- Assess new silicon, radio modules, sensors and toolchains against performance, cost, lifecycle and supply considerations.
- Architect RTOS and bare-metal firmware, including scheduling, interrupts, drivers and hardware abstraction.
- Write, review and refactor embedded C/C++ code for resource-constrained devices.
- Develop and maintain bootloader and fail-safe OTA update strategies.
- Monitor system resource utilisation, timing behaviour, power consumption and reliability.
- Review electronic schematics, component selection, pin allocation and power sequencing.
- Support hardware bring-up, board validation, production testing and provisioning.
- Integrate vehicle communication protocols and onboard interfaces.
- Architect cellular connectivity and resilient communication behaviour for challenging coverage environments.
- Build security into the embedded platform through secure boot, signed images, encryption and appropriate key-management practices.
- Establish automated testing and regression practices and support hardware-in-the-loop validation.
- Lead technical investigations into field failures and feed lessons learned back into the product architecture.
- Mentor firmware and test engineers through technical reviews, debugging and knowledge sharing.
- Communicate technical risks, constraints and trade-offs effectively across engineering, product, operations and executive stakeholders.
Minimum Requirements
- BEng or BSc (Eng) in Electronic, Computer or Electrical Engineering.
- 5-10 years' relevant post-graduate embedded systems experience.
- At least 3 years' experience operating at senior, lead or architecture level.
- A demonstrable track record of contributing to at least two embedded products delivered into volume production.
- Expert embedded C skills with strong C++ experience.
- Experience with ARM Cortex-M-class microcontrollers and embedded systems architecture.
- Practical RTOS experience such as FreeRTOS, Zephyr, ThreadX or similar.
- Strong knowledge of CAN, CAN FD, J1939, OBD-II and UDS.
- Experience with I²C, SPI, UART, USB, RS-232/485 and GPIO.
- Experience integrating GNSS, accelerometers, IMUs and cellular modems.
- Knowledge of LTE-M, NB-IoT and/or Cat-1/4 connectivity.
- Understanding of TCP/IP, MQTT, TLS, SIM/eSIM provisioning and network behaviour.
- Strong hardware and firmware debugging skills.
- Experience with Git, code reviews, CI and static analysis.
- Valid driver's licence and willingness to travel when required.
- Valid South African work eligibility.
Desirable Skills
- Telematics, fleet management or automotive electronics experience.
- CAN reverse engineering and multi-vehicle compatibility experience.
- Secure elements, HSM, PKI or device provisioning experience.
- MISRA C and formal/static analysis experience.
- Hardware-in-the-loop testing and vehicle simulation.
- Embedded Linux or Cortex-A exposure.
- AWS IoT, Azure IoT Hub or comparable cloud integration experience.
- Knowledge of POPIA and GDPR considerations for connected-device data.
