About the position
A well-known international chemical manufacturing company requires the above to manage and oversee all maintenance activities within the plant, with a focus on electrical and mechanical systems. This role ensures the reliability, safety, and efficiency of plant equipment and facilities, supports compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act, and drives continuous improvement in maintenance practices.
Minimum requirements for the role:
- A National Diploma or a BTech in Electrical Engineering is essential for the role. Relevant OHSA and regs exam (Pass) by the commission of examiners with 2 years’ experience, as required by the OHS Act for GMR 2.1 appointment is essential.
- A Government Certificate of Competency (GCC) Factories is preferred for this role but not essential.
- The successful candidate must be a qualified electrician registered with the Department of Labour and authorised to issue Certificates of Compliance (CoCs) for electrical installations, in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and SANS 10142.
- Must satisfy the competence requirements for appointment as a GMR 2.1 (general machinery regulation) appointee for electrical installations in the 1300–3000 kVA range, as stipulated by the OHS Act and relevant regulations.
- Previous (Minimum 5 years’) experience having worked in a Maintenance Lead role within an industrial or chemical or packaging or automotive plant maintenance environment is essential for the role with at least 2 years in a supervisory or lead role.
- Strong knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems, preventative maintenance, and troubleshooting techniques.
- Demonstrated experience and understanding of the OHS Act, General Machinery Regulations (GMR 2.1), and legal responsibilities for machinery supervision.
- Must be computer literate and experience with maintenance management systems (e.g., SAP, CMMS) is advantageous but not essential as training will be provided.
- Requirements, including competence for electrical installations in the 1300–3000 kVA range.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organisational skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a proactive approach to problem-solving.
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Managing and overseeing all maintenance activities within the plant, with a focus on electrical and mechanical systems. This role ensures the reliability, safety, and efficiency of plant equipment and facilities, supports compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act, and drives continuous improvement in maintenance practices.
- Ensuring that all machinery is supervised and maintained in accordance with General Machinery Regulations (GMR 2.1) and other applicable legal (SANS, API, etc.) requirements, including competence for electrical installations in the 1300–3000 kVA range.
- Supervising and coordinating daily maintenance operations, including preventative and corrective maintenance on plant equipment and facilities.
- Leading a team of maintenance technicians, providing training, guidance, and performance feedback.
- Ensuring all machinery and equipment are operated, maintained, and supervised in strict compliance with the OHS Act and General Machinery Regulations (GMR 2.1), including the appointment and training of competent persons for machinery supervision.
- Developing, implementing, and monitoring preventative maintenance schedules and programs to ensure ongoing compliance and equipment reliability.
- Troubleshooting and repairing electrical and control systems, ensuring minimal downtime and optimal equipment performance.
- Maintaining accurate records of maintenance work, equipment history, and inventory of parts and supplies.
- Participating in root cause failure analysis and implementing corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Collaborating with production, engineering, and other departments to support operational goals and resolve maintenance-related issues.
- Leading and participating in safety meetings and initiatives to promote a culture of safety and compliance.
- Preparing for and participating in audits and inspections related to machinery safety and legal compliance.
