About the position
Our client in the mining industry is currently looking for a Diesel Mechanic with a strong mechanical background in both diesel and petrol vehicles, combined with proven team leadership and fleet management experience. The role requires strategic oversight of servicing schedules aligned with operational peaks and downtimes.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
Workshop Management
- Supervise all workshop operations including diagnostics, repairs, and maintenance of diesel and petrol vehicles.
- Ensure work quality and adherence to safety and technical standards.
- Manage, train, and motivate a team of mechanics and support staff.
- Maintain and monitor workshop tools, equipment, and part inventories.
- Ensure proper documentation, including service records, job cards, and inspection reports.
Fleet Management - Oversee maintenance and servicing of the full vehicle fleet.
- Develop and manage preventive maintenance schedules.
- Monitor fleet performance, breakdowns, and repair turnaround times.
- Optimize fleet utilization and availability based on peak and low operational periods.
- Track fuel consumption, driver reports, and mileage for cost control and performance improvement.
- Ensure vehicles comply with legal, safety, and operational standards (licensing, roadworthiness, etc.).
- Liaise with suppliers, insurance, and service providers regarding fleet needs.
Requirements
- Qualified Diesel Mechanic (Trade Tested - Red Seal preferred).
- Minimum 10 years of mechanical experience with diesel and petrol vehicles.
- At least 6 years in a supervisory or management capacity, including workshop and team leadership.
- Solid experience in fleet management, scheduling, and optimization.
- Strong technical fault-finding, diagnostic, and repair skills.
- Proven ability to manage budgets and operational costs.
- Valid driver's license (Code 08 or higher).
- Proficient in workshop management software or fleet tracking systems.
