About the position
We are seeking an exceptional academic leader to take on the role of Dean of Faculty: IT. This is a strategic and executive-level position responsible for driving academic excellence, innovation, and regulatory compliance across the faculty.
The successful candidate will shape the future of IT education within the institution-ensuring programmes remain relevant, industry-aligned, and academically rigorous in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Faculty Management
- Provide visionary leadership for the Faculty, aligning academic strategy with institutional goals
- Drive academic and financial performance in line with annual strategic plans and budgets
- Position the Faculty within the national higher education and regulatory environment
- Build and maintain strategic partnerships with industry, government, and academic institutions
- Lead academic transformation, innovation, and research initiatives
Academic Programme Oversight
- Oversee the planning, development, accreditation, and review of IT programmes
- Ensure compliance with regulatory bodies (e.g. CHE, SAQA)
- Maintain quality, consistency, and effectiveness of curriculum delivery across all campuses
- Monitor student success, throughput rates, and retention strategies
- Ensure standardisation of programme rollout and academic delivery
Teaching, Learning & Research
- Champion excellence in teaching, learning, and assessment practices
- Promote a strong research culture, including publications and innovation
- Supervise academic quality assurance processes, including moderation and evaluation
- Contribute to lecturing (8-12 hours per week) and postgraduate supervision
- Support development of short courses and executive education offerings
People & Operational Leadership
- Lead, develop, and manage academic staff across campuses
- Drive staff capacity development and performance excellence
- Oversee faculty budgets and resource allocation
- Ensure effective collaboration across departments and institutional divisions
Minimum Requirements
- PhD / Doctorate in a relevant IT or related discipline (non-negotiable)
- Proven track record as an academic leader and thought leader in the field
- Experience within a higher education / tertiary environment
- Strong research portfolio, including peer-reviewed journal publications (local and international)
- Demonstrated experience in Master's supervision
- Experience engaging with regulatory bodies and professional boards
- Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills
Advantageous
- Professorship or eligibility for professorial appointment
- Senior academic or managerial experience within a tertiary institution
- Industry experience within the IT / digital sector
- Recognised thought leadership and public presence in digital or technology domains
Additional Requirements
- Willingness to be based at any campus and relocate if required
- Ability to travel between campuses as needed
