About the position

Postion Summary:
iThemba LABS is seeking an experienced electronics technician for its Accelerator Operations and Technical Support department.

Key Responsibilities:

• Optimise the operation and maintenance of the 3 Megavolt Tandetron accelerator system and its beam transportation systems for the reliable delivery of consistent, high-quality beams of the particle type as required by the user 24/7Responsible for daily operations of the Tandetron accelerator in accordance with the agreed beam schedule and qualityProduce the beam energy and change the beam energy if and when required
• Responsible for the first-line maintenance of Tandetron's electro-mechanical and electronic systems through fault-finding and repairs of such systems as well as routine maintenance procedures
• Coordinate the provision of more specialized maintenance services to the Tandetron accelerator, such as vacuum and power supply maintenance
• Maintain statistical data and documentation on the Tandetron operational availability
• Perform standby duties relating to the operation and maintenance of the Tandetron accelerator
• Assist with accelerator development work as and when required

Minimum Qualification:

• Bachelors Degree / Advanced Diploma / NQF 7

Minimum Experience:

• 3-3 years

• BTech Electrical / Electronic / Mechanical / Mechatronics Engineering OR BSc (Physics)

Experience:

• At least 3 years’ experience in at least one of the following: Maintenance and/or design of mechanical/electronic systemsInterfacing of electronicsProgramming and/or simulation codesSystem integration with EPICS programming will be an advantage

Knowledge:

• Intermediate to advanced knowledge of electronics/mechanical systems/simulation toolsProficient in the use of multi-meters and oscilloscopes for fault-finding purposesAttention to detail and quality Ability to maintain a high standard of workmanship through a hands-on approachAbility to trace and analyze problems logically down to component levelConsciousness of health and safetyBasic working knowledge of the Linux OS
