About the position

Postion Summary:
To contribute to the strategic direction of the collections and library and biodiversity information management, in collaboration with the Collections and Biodiversity Information Managers and Senior Librarian.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Research and science advancement, collections building and capacity developmentContribute to Collections and Information Management

Minimum Qualification:
  • Doctoral Degree / NQF 10

Minimum Experience:
  • 2-3 years
  • PhD in Zoology, with preferred specialisation in Ichthyology

Experience:
  • Two years post PhD research experienceRecognised expertise in fish taxonomy, with extensive knowledge of African marine and freshwater fish species
  • Proven publication record (minimum of 6 ISI papers), with demonstrated expertise in integrative taxonomic, with an emphasis on fish
  • Experience with natural history collections (minimum 5years)
  • Knowledge of fish systematics, taxonomy and museum curation
  • Knowledge of other taxonomic groups (added advantage)Management experience (added advantage)

Knowledge:
  • Ability to identify freshwater and marine fishes of southern Africa
  • Knowledge of the biodiversity issues and research needs for freshwater and marine systems in southern Africa, with a clear vision for future research and expansion of the collections
  • Documented experience in planning, leading, coordinating and executing field surveys
  • Financial knowledge and experience (SCM processes and budget management)
  • Good knowledge of curatorial systems of wet museum collections
