Counsellor (x2 - 12 Months Fixed Term Contract - Wits PHRU)

About the position

Background:

• The Perinatal HIV Research Unit (Wits PHRU) was established in 1996
• The Perinatal HIV Research Unit has been involved in research, training, policy formation, and advocacy in issues concerning HIV-positive women and their children
• In recent years, the work of the unit has expanded beyond the original focus of mother-to-child transmission of HIV

 
Main purpose of the job:

• Focus on Recruiting participants for a specific programmed within the unit, in compliance with the necessary protocol
• Once the participants have been recruited, the retention thereof becomes a focus

Location:

• PHRU, Chris Hani Baragwanath New Nurses Home, Soweto

Key performance areas:

• Assist with the completion of patient consent forms and eCRFs
• Obtain and Copy source documents as per study requirements
• To recruit and enroll eligible participants for the study and assist the nurse with all non-invasive activities e.g., collection of vitals
• Do pre- and post-HIV test counselling if required
• Maintain patient confidentiality
• Maintain accurate records of patient contacts and complete screening & enrolment logs
• Assist or take on any other duties as deemed appropriate for the study team
• Do home visit as and when required

Required minimum education and training:

• Matric
• Basic HIV Counselling Certificate
• Valid Driver’s license and able to drive

Required minimum work experience:

• Minimum 2-years’ experience as a Counsellor

Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:

• Good Clinical Practice (GCP) Certification
• Computer literacy
• Ability to communicate in local languages
• Always uphold the standards of patient care and to behave respectfully towards patients and colleagues
• Ability to work independently
• Willing to work overtime if required
• Good problem-solving skills
• Be able to work under pressure
• Willing to learn new skills
