About the position
A well-established law firm on the East Rand seeks a senior, commercially minded Conveyancing Manager to lead its dynamic conveyancing department.
ROLE PURPOSE
To provide strategic, technical, and operational leadership within a high-volume conveyancing department, while driving efficiency, growth, and strong client relationships.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Admitted Attorney and Conveyancer
- 8+ years’ post-admission conveyancing experience
- Proven experience managing a conveyancing department in a high-volume environment (retail, bank-panel, or developer-driven)
- Demonstrated expertise across the full conveyancing lifecycle, including:
- Transfers (including complex matters)
- Bond registrations
- Bond cancellations
- Strong working knowledge of:
- South African property law
- Deeds Office processes, timelines, and risk points
- Compliance requirements affecting conveyancing transactions
ADVANTAGEOUS (NOT ESSENTIAL)
- Experience in property development conveyancing (training can be provided)
- Prior exposure to business or departmental P&L responsibility
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Technical Conveyancing Oversight
- Personally manage complex conveyancing matters
- Provide final oversight and quality control across:
- Transfers
- Bond registrations
- Bond cancellations
- Development-related conveyancing
- Ensure matters progress efficiently from instruction to registration with minimal delays
2. Leadership & Team Management
- Lead and manage the conveyancing department, including:
- Conveyancing secretaries
- Paralegals
- Bond registration and cancellation staff
- Manage a team of approximately 5–10 staff, scaling as the firm grows
- Responsible for:
- Work allocation and capacity management
- Performance management and accountability
- Mentorship, coaching, and skills development
- Recruitment, onboarding, and training where required
3. Workflow, Billing & Financial Oversight
- Monitor and manage:
- Daily, weekly, and monthly workflow volumes
- Turnaround times and operational bottlenecks
- Billing accuracy and timelines
- Take ownership of:
- Departmental productivity
- Fee recovery and billing discipline
- Reporting key performance metrics to firm principals
4. Client Relationships & Business Development
- Build and maintain strong relationships with:
- Estate agents
- Developers
- Mortgage originators
- Private clients
- Actively:
- Source new instructions
- Grow existing client relationships
- Protect and expand the firm’s referral base
- Act as a senior ambassador of the firm in the market
