About the position
Background:
- The Wits Diagnostic Innovation Hub (DIH) is a division of Wits Health Consortium
- Wits Health Consortium (Pty) Limited ("WHC") is a wholly-owned Company of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (South Africa) under its Faculty of Health Sciences
- WHC provides Faculty with a legal framework within which to operate the research and other activities necessary to support its academic objectives. In addition, WHC offers a range of products and services to Academics
Main purpose of the job:
- The Clinical Associate is responsible for scanning patient files, conducting daily follow-up visits on enrolled cohort neonates and infants
- They are also responsible for collection of blood samples and rectal swabs from neonates, as well as collection of blood, breastmilk, rectal and vaginal swabs from maternal participants
- They will be responsible for locating and consenting participants
- They will also be required to abstract details from medical records and assist in quality control of the database
Location:
- Nurses’ Residence, Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital
Key performance areas:
1.Participant Enrollment
- Locate and consent participants
- Answer any questions parents may have during the consenting process
2.Administration
- Collect and copy the required data from the participant’s medical file and record information into the secure Wits VIDA portal
- Record and maintain enrolment logs daily Follow GCP guidelines
- Report on stats of participants enrolled daily
- Complete and electronically file all relevant documentation
- Complete abstraction onto the database daily
- Record any septic episodes daily
- Assist with quality control of database by doing verification
- Assist research assistants (when required) to complete Health Economics Questionnaire
3.Clinical Duties
- Perform daily follow up visits of enrolled cohort neonates
- Collect case plates from NHLS
- Identify cases from NHLS
- Collect rectal swabs and bloods from neonates as required
- Collect rectal and vaginal swabs, blood samples and breastmilk samples from maternal participants as required
- Keep track of outcome of neonates - to notify the MITS team if there have been any neonates who have demised
4.Customer Service
- Ensure all customer interaction (Both internal and external customers) is of the highest professional level
- Build and maintain authentic relationships with all stakeholders ensuring that all interactions are professional
- Effectively manage work processes in order to maintain high levels of productivity

Required minimum education and training:
- BCMP Degree (Bachelor of Clinical Medical Practice)
Professional Body Registration:
Required minimum work experience:
- Previous research experience and previous experience navigating hospital environments are desirable
- Comfortable working with computers
- Preferable to have experience working with neonates and infants, should be comfortable with performing procedures on them
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:
- Confidentiality, tact and discretion must be maintained at all times
- Ability to manage self and prioritize own workload
- Self motivated, able to work independently and work as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
- Must be comfortable working with neonates and infants and performing procedures on them
Demands of the job:
- Working overtime on weekends is required
- Working efficiently to keep up with tight study deadlines
- Locating participants, consenting participants, taking samples, abstracting medical records and assisting with quality control of information on the database
- Any other administrative and/or supportive study tasks to ensure the success of the study
