Main purpose of the job:

  • The purpose of the CFO is reporting to the CEO and has primary responsibility to oversee and direct financial, accounting, treasury and investment activities in support of the Group strategy
  • The CFO ensures sound financial management and investment practices that support organizational growth, financial stability, and community impact goals
  • The CFO ensures organizational compliance with relevant laws and tax obligations and manages organizational risks and liabilities
  • Partners with the Executive Team and Board when required to identify, establish, and maintain funds, and to provide other products and services that meet donors’ /client’s goals
  • He/she partners with the relevant Stakeholders to ensure proper recording and auditing of investment strategies that advance the Groups strategic goals

Location:

  • Johannesburg Northern suburbs, Gauteng 

Key performance areas:

Strategic Planning and Leadership

  • Work closely with the Finance Managers, Executive Heads, and CEO to develop and implement strategic plans and goals that support the organization’s mission and vision
  • Lead the Finance Committee, collaborating with other committee members to provide strategic financial guidance and support to the organization
  • Lead donor-funded project financial strategy, including cost recovery, allocation methodologies, and indirect cost rate negotiations
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to the finance team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional development
  • Collaborate with other senior leaders to develop and implement strategies that support the organization’s mission and goals
  • Carry out any other duties or special assignments as assigned by the CEO

Board Relations and Reporting

  • Report on the financial performance of the organization to the Board of Directors, including regular updates on budget performance, forecasts, and financial risks and opportunities
  • Collaborate with the CEO and Board of Directors to develop and implement financial policies and procedures that align with the organization’s values and strategic goals
  • Present donor financial reports and unfunded positions analysis to the Board at least twice a year
  • Represent the organization at internal and external events and meetings, providing financial guidance and support as needed

Tax Filing and Compliance

  • Oversee all tax filings and compliance requirements, ensuring that the organization is in compliance with all relevant laws and regulations
  • Manage relationships with external auditors and other financial service providers to ensure compliance with all reporting and regulatory requirements

Financial Management & Reporting:

  • Develop and monitor the implementation of long-range financial plans in conjunction with the CEO and the Finance Committee, including setting targets for organizational growth
  • As member of leadership team, develop, present, and secure Board approval for strategic organizational initiatives
  • Oversee the Accounting, Accounts Payable, Donor Fund tracking and Gift Processing functions to ensure best practice and compliance with all applicable legal and regulatory standards
  • Manage and oversee all financial operations, including accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis
  • Prepare and facilitate the preparation of quarterly and annual financial statements for presentation and submission to the CEO and Board within stipulated timeframes and in accordance with prescribed norms and standards
  • Ensure the accuracy and completeness of financial records, including the general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, payroll, and other financial systems
  • Present monthly Donor reports to EXCO and budget holders (YTD actual vs budget vs available funds)
  • Prepare and present financial reports to the CEO and Board of Directors, providing analysis and recommendations as needed
  • Ensure compliance with all financial reporting and regulatory requirements, including tax filings, audits, and other reporting requirements
  • Ensure 100% on-time donor financial reporting and zero disallowed costs in donor audits/assessment
  • Prepare for and lead donor audits if required (single or project specific)
  • Manage relationships with external partners, including banks, auditors, and other financial service providers

Budgeting and Forecasting:

  • Lead the annual budgeting process, working closely with Prrogram Managers, Business Heads, and other Stakeholders to develop realistic and achievable budgets
  • Monitor actual performance against budget and provide regular updates and analysis to the Management, EXCO and Board of Directors
  • Develop and maintain financial forecasting models that support long-term financial planning and decision-making

Policies, Procedures and Systems

  • Develop and maintain internal financial- policies and procedures, performance measures, and dashboards
  • Review and manage (and establish as needed) internal systems, controls, processes, and procedures to ensure the integrity, accuracy, compliance, and usefulness of financial information and reporting
  • Ensure the establishment of systems, procedures and processes to ensure efficient and effective banking and cash management
  • Establish donor compliance manual and grant management system
  • Oversee cash flows and forecasts to determine cash resource requirements for submission to the relevant departments and management teams

Compliance and Controls:

  • Work with the Legal, Risk & Compliance Team to ensure compliance with all applicable financial, accounting, legal, and regulatory requirements and best-practice standards; ensure a system of strong internal controls
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly financial statements and financial analysis; oversee annual audit
  • Lead the Investment Committee to ensure compliance with Board–approved investment policies
  • Research and propose community investment approaches that advance Foundation goals
  • Ensure the timely reporting of investment activity to donors and fundholders

Payroll Management:

  • Interpret, implement and maintain the Income Tax Act, ETI and other payroll related acts and regulations
  • Perform high level monitoring controls including a review of the reconciliation between the general ledger and the payroll and exception reports
  • Review and approve all statutory returns (PAYE, UIF, IRP5 Certificates, Pension/Provident Fund Deductions and Levies)

Team Leadership:

  • Lead the Finance Team to achieve KPIs and high customer service levels
  • Oversee day-to-day finance and accounting operations including general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, fixed assets, prepaids, credit card expense reporting, payroll processing, monthly reconciliation, and monthly and year-end close
  • Plan and organise the work of the team to accomplish strategic and operational goals in the most cost-effective manner possible
  • Provide leadership that ensures team objectives are achieved efficiently and effectively through coaching, inspiration, motivation and development of people
  • Monitor and review performance and drive accountable for achieving results, meeting standards of excellence and delivering any improvement goals which have been identified; taking decisive action in the case of poor performance
  • Lead by example by living the Company values and bringing them to life in your daily routines

Required minimum education and training:

  • Relevant CA qualification 

Required minimum work experience:

  • At least 10 years of progressive leadership experience in financial management, with at least 8 years in a non-profit organization and/or social enterprise
  • +8 years in a Non-profit and/or Social enterprise
  • Proven track record of successful financial management, including experience developing and implementing financial strategies, managing budgets, and overseeing financial reporting and compliance
  • Proven track record in donor-funded projects, grant management, and donor audits

Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:

Technical Knowledge:

  • Investment, Credit Risk and Accounting knowledge (Incl. IFRS and Taxation)
  • External financial and regulatory reporting knowledge
  • Strong knowledge of Regulatory and Legal requirements for NPOs and Businesses in South Africa and track record of successful implementation thereof
  • Computer literate, able to use Microsoft Office suite to prepare logical, coherent, and consistent documents
