JOB TITLE: Chief Financial Officer
DEPARTMENT: Finance and Administration
DIRECT REPORT: The Headmaster

  • ROLE OVERVIEW:

The CFO is responsible for the financial strategy, sustainability and overall financial health of the school. This includes overseeing all financial operations, managing the financial planning and analysis processes, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, developing strategies for, and implementing, revenue generating commercial activities generation and overall cost management. The CFO will collaborate with, and support, the Advancement Director, the College Executive Committee and the College community to support the College's mission, commercial and strategic objectives.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Financial Management

Oversee the preparation and execution of the College's budget, including Capex and integrated cash forecasts.

Ensure the maintenance of a robust accounting system and the implementation of policies for sound financial governance.

Manage and oversee the Financial Manager and the finance team, ensuring: accountability and efficiency in all financial operations;

  • that the Financial Manager and the finance team are held accountable for the execution of their duties and that all functions are carried out effectively;
  • the implementation of a sound accounting system including the operation policies required for good governance;
  • the timely preparation of zero-based budgets, including Capex and integrated cash forecasts; the timely attendance to financial reporting, including the preparation of monthly management accounts, the Annual Finance Statements (IFRS) and the Finance Committee Report in the Annual Report;
  • that effective internal controls are maintained over all processes which affect the finances of the College including the approval limits with regard to procurement.

Manage and oversee the Operations and IT Departments under the direction of the Financial Manager in the execution of its functions.

Ensure the finance team's timely preparation of the monthly management accounts, annual financial statements and other financial reports and presenting such documents to the Headmaster and College Council.

Develop and implement long-term financial strategies to ensure the College's financial sustainability and growth.

Conduct regular financial analysis and forecasting to support strategic decision-making and risk management.

Communicate financial information and strategies to key stakeholders, including presenting financial reports and proposals in a clear and concise manner.

Ensure compliance with Independent Schools Association of Southern Africa ("ISASA") specific financial reporting requirements and standards.

Revenue Generation and Commercial Activities

Identify and pursue opportunities for revenue generation through effective utilisation of College assets, donations, and partnerships.

Work closely with the Advancement Director to develop and implement strategic fundraising plans, including campaigns targeting parents, alumni, corporations, trusts, and foundations.

Support the Advancement Director in his/her fundraising efforts, including preparing funding proposals and supporting documentation.

Oversee the management of commercial leases, property development projects, and other revenue-generating initiatives.

Explore and establish new commercial opportunities, such as medical facilities, retail spaces, and other ventures that align with the College's objectives.

Leverage connections within the ISASA community to identify unique funding and commercial opportunities and partnerships.

Governance and Administration

Serve as a key member of the College Executive Committee, providing strategic financial input.

Act as a voting member of the College Council and participate in various committees, including the Foundation, Finance, Planning, Remuneration and Investment Committees.

Ensure compliance with all relevant financial regulations and standards, including IFRS and ISASA-specific guidelines.

Oversee the management of the IT department and ensure effective use of technology in financial operations.

Human Resources

Supervise the Human Resource Manager and ensure alignment of HR strategies with the College's business objectives.

Ensure compliance with employment laws and regulations, manage employee relations, and oversee HR operations.

Develop and implement HR policies and procedures that support the school's strategic goals.

Strategic Planning

Collaborate with the College Executive Committee to develop and implement the College's strategic plan.

Provide financial insights and recommendations to support the College's strategic initiatives and long-term goals.

Lead the financial planning process, including the development of long-term financial projections and scenario analysis.

Align financial strategies with the specific goals and educational framework of the ISASA curriculum.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field. A Master's degree or professional certification (e.g., CA, CPA, CFA) is preferred.

Minimum of 10 years of experience in financial management, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role.

Proven experience in strategic financial planning, budgeting, and analysis.

Strong knowledge of financial regulations and standards, including IFRS and ISASA-specific guidelines.

Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders and build strong relationships.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a focus on strategic thinking and innovation.
