Job Purpose
To safely operate and monitor the steam boiler and supporting utility systems that enable reliable sauce manufacturing operations. The role is responsible for day-to-day boiler operation, routine utilities monitoring, bulk offloading coordination, first-line fault reporting, and accurate operating records to support safe, efficient and uninterrupted plant performance.
Minimum Requirements
Grade 12 / Matric.
Qualified or certified Boiler Operator with relevant boiler operating competence for an industrial plant environment.
Minimum 3-5 years’ experience operating industrial boilers and supporting utilities in a food, beverage or process manufacturing environment.
Practical experience with diesel-fired boilers, water treatment / softener systems, feedwater control, blowdown management and bulk liquid offloading
Working knowledge of utility systems such as chillers, cooling towers, air compressors and associated distribution systems.
Ability to work shifts, overtime, weekends and call-outs when required.
Key Responsibilities
1. Boiler Operation
Operate, start up, shut down and monitor the steam boiler and associated auxiliaries in line with plant SOPs and legal requirements.
Monitor steam pressure, feedwater levels, burner performance, fuel consumption, water quality and blowdown condition.
Inspect and manage the hotwell / feedwater system, water softener, dosing systems and other boiler house support equipment.
Complete routine boiler checks, record operating readings and immediately escalate unsafe or abnormal conditions.
2. Utilities Monitoring
Monitor the chiller, cooling tower and chilled water circulation to ensure stable process cooling.
Monitor the air compressor system, including receiver, dryer, filters and pressure stability, and report any deviation or loss of performance.
Carry out routine utility inspections for temperature, pressure, leaks, vibration, alarms and general equipment condition.
Support start-ups, shutdowns and coordination of utility availability for production and maintenance activities.
3. Bulk Offloading and Tank Management
Manage the safe offloading of diesel, oil and vinegar into the designated storage systems.
Verify correct product, receiving tank capacity, hose connections, valve positions and transfer route before offloading begins.
Prevent spills, cross-contamination, overfilling and stock losses through disciplined checks and monitoring during transfer.
Maintain accurate offloading records and communicate stock concerns or abnormal usage to the relevant teams.
4. Safety, Compliance and Housekeeping
Follow all plant safety, food safety, GMP, OH&S and environmental procedures.
Comply with lock-out / tag-out, permit-to-work and site emergency requirements where applicable.
Maintain clean, safe and audit-ready boiler, compressor, chiller and offloading areas.
Support statutory inspections, maintenance planning, incident investigations and corrective actions.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
Boiler and utilities uptime / availability.
Safe and compliant boiler operation with no major statutory or safety breaches.
Reliable supply of steam, cooling and compressed air to production.
Accurate completion of utility logs, shift handovers and offloading records.
Fuel, oil and vinegar offloading completed without spills, contamination or stock variances.
Good housekeeping and audit readiness in utility areas.
