About the position
Introduction
The position of Biostatistician is vacant. The Biostatistician will report directly to the Senior Manager: Data Analytics and forms part of the Research and Development Division. The position is based at Head Office in Pretoria.
The total remuneration package will be between R1,109,620 and R1,386,956 per annum, based on skills and experience.
The closing date for applications will be Tuesday, 16 September 2025.
Duties & Responsibilities
The Biostatistician will be required to perform the following functions within the Research and Development Division under the supervision of the Senior Manager: Data Analytics through the implementation of the following:
- Develop comprehensive statistical analysis plans aligned with GEMS' Research Strategy
- Execute complex statistical analyses for healthcare research projects and present findings to stakeholders
- Design and maintain statistical models to describe and predict epidemiological profiles of the Scheme membership
- Develop monitoring reports and interactive dashboards to track implementation of research recommendations
- Analyse specific Scheme challenges and generate evidence-based recommendations
- Collaborate with the Health Policy unit and researchers on healthcare publications
- Consult with technical stakeholders to enhance statistical methodologies
- Develop in-depth understanding of the Scheme's data assets according to the Data Management Strategy
- Recommend statistical software applications and collaborate with ICT on implementation
- Ensure compliance with data governance, ethics, applicable policies and regulations
- Build collaborative relationships with multidisciplinary research teams
- Develop and maintain productive partnerships with internal and external stakeholders
- Facilitate development of operational SLAs with key partners
- Coach and mentor junior staff in statistical analysis techniques
Minimum Requirements
- Degree - Biostatistics, Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Actuarial Science or related science field.
- Preferred Qualification: Post-graduate or Master's degree - Biostatistics, Statistics, Mathematics. Medicine, Biology, Clinical Statistics Certifications will be an added advantage.
- At least 5 years' experience in a mathematical and or statistical analysis role in health or clinical research projects
- At least 2 years' experience as a Biostatistician for health or clinical research projects will be an added advantage
- Experience in the medical schemes industry will be an added advantage
- Experience in Statistics, Data Mining & Manipulation techniques is required
- Experience in STATA / SPSS/ R / SAS / SQL / VBA / Other coding languages is required.
- Advanced MS Office skills - MS Access, Excel, Word, PowerPoint.
- Development, Coaching, mentoring or line management experience required
