Biogeochemistry Laboratory Assistant at NRF National Research Foundation

About the position

Postion Summary:
The SAEON Elwandle Coastal Node is based in Port Elizabeth at the Ocean Sciences Campus of the Nelson Mandela University. The Elwandle Coastal Node is mandated to undertake long-term monitoring and research on South Africa’s coastal zone. The node comprises a dynamic team of driven individuals who have a passion for the sustainable utilization of our coastal resources.

Key Responsibilities:

• Assist with the preparation which include but not limited to cleaning and preparing containers for routine sample collection
• Assist with the preparation of calibration solutions
• Assist with carrying out standard operating procedures
• Assist with routine procurement of chemicals and PPE when necessary
• Conduct chl-a analyses using spectrophotometry and fluorometry methods
• Assist with samples of phytoplankton and zooplankton for long-term storage
• Manage water purification system and keep accurate record of usage
• Assist with stock taking and asset management in the laboratory

Minimum Qualification:

• Diploma / Advanced Certificate / NQF 6

Minimum Experience:

• 0-2 years

• National Diploma in Analytical Chemistry or equivalent

Experience:

• Experience in laboratory analyses of nutrients/carbon/metals

Knowledge:

• Demonstrate a knowledge of validation and quality control methods
• Demonstrable knowledge of laboratory best practice
