About the position

The Assistant Librarian Contractor position, in the Library and Archives Unit, is for a period of 6 months.

The total cost of basic salary per month is R10 000,00.

The closing date for applications will be Friday, 12 August 2022.

PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
To assist the Librarian and Senior Librarian with effective management/functioning of the SAHRA library, as well as support to core business activities.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:
KPA 1: Library Operations.
KPA 2: Core Business Support.

Library Operations:

  • Cataloguing of library materials.
  • Monitor the use of library resources to ensure users correctly handle materials.
  • Reshelf library materials.
  • Covering and preparation of materials for loaning.
  • Interact with library users.
  • Conduct loaning and returns procedures for library materials as per the library procedures manual.
  • Assist librarian with stock take and GRAP103 activities.
  • Identify books to be included on the book review list for purchasing.
  • Take minutes of book review committee meetings.

Core Business Support:

  • Provide input into book displays and prepare appropriate display materials.
  • Provide support to SAHRA staff and external parties to locate materials within the library.
  • Perform a daily review of received newspapers and other periodicals to identify items relating to heritage and catalog them onto the library system as per library procedures.
  • Notify SAHRA staff of new material arrivals as well as relevant articles and periodicals.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Degree in librarianship (BBibl/BLIS/PGDip.LIS), or similar.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, analyse, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

NUMERICALSKILLS:
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages and volume.

REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

LICENSES:
A valid Code EB (08) driver's license will be an added advantage.

Computer Skill:
Computer literacy with regard to the use of Excel, Word and Power Point, experience using InMagic will be an added advantage.
