About the position

Title: Archaeologist.
Unit: Archaeology, Palaeontology and Meteorites - (APM) Unit.
LOCATION: Cape Town Head Office.
Annual basic salary = R327 209.00

PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
To assist the manager of the Archaeology, Palaeontology and Meteorites (APM) Unit to manage heritage in relation to archaeological resources, and to provide technical and administrative support to the unit.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

Key Performance Areas (KPA's):
Policy Development:

  • Participate and inform the development, review and implementation of policies, procedures, and guidelines for the management of archaeological resources.
  • Develop and update Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Provide input into policy, guidelines, procedures developed by both internal and external stakeholders.

Heritage Resources Management:

  • Review and process section 27, 32, and 35 permit applications related to archaeological resources.
  • Monitor and review the submission of permit reports.
  • Periodically undertake site visits and produce site visit reports for declared archaeological sites.
  • Provide guidance to site managers on matters related to site conservation.
  • Review nomination dossiers; and undertake technical site assessments.
  • Attend and present reports to internal SAHRA committees.

Stakeholder Engagement and Management:

  • Regular engagement with key stakeholder (internal and external) to strengthen the current relations in the management of archaeological resources.
  • Identify potential stakeholders that can strengthen the management of heritage resources.
  • Identify areas of improvement in the management of stakeholders, both internal and external.

Project Management and Coordination:

  • Identify, coordinate, and implement new projects related to the management and conservation of archaeological resources.
  • Monitoring of budgets and performance of service providers related to project implementation.
  • Where applicable, assist and support internal units on the implementation on projects related to the conservation and promotion of heritage resources.

Research and promotion:

  • Attendance at local and international conferences.
  • Conduct lectures and talks on heritage management to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Participate in awareness campaigns on the function and mandate of the unit.
  • Produce and publish papers on heritage management.

Administration:

  • Ensure proper filing and record keeping of all administrative documents, including submissions, minutes of stakeholder engagements etc.
  • Compile quarterly reports on stakeholder engagements, permit issued and project implementation.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
At least a Master's degree in Archaeology, preferably with a focus on Heritage Resources Management.
Minimum of 3 years' work experience in the field of Archaeology.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, analyse, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from applicants, regulatory agencies, or members of the public. Ability to effectively present information to management, public groups, and/or council.

NUMERICAL SKILLS:
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

LICENSES:
A valid Code EB (08) Driver's licence.

COMPUTER SKILL:
Computer literacy regarding the use of Excel, Word, Power Point, MS Teams.
