About the position
Job purpose: To ensure the continuous, efficient, and safe operation of all pressurized ammonia systems in compliance with relevant gas and pressure equipment regulations.
Primary Functions
- Plant Operation: Operate, monitor, and adjust ammonia compressors, condensers, and cooling towers to meet production and temperature requirements.
- Safety Compliance: Enforce all safety policies, incident safety responses, and protocols related to hazardous materials.
- Inspections: Conduct thorough daily and weekly inspections of plant rooms, valve stations, and rack areas to prevent system breakdowns.
- Maintenance Support: Perform preventative maintenance and assist in the servicing of pressurized ammonia systems.
- Logging & Reporting: Accurately document plant readings, monitor energy consumption, and report any potential leakages or equipment failures immediately
Financial management
- Financial Reporting: Prepare operational budgets, manage cost control, and report on pack-out percentages, wastage, and throughput to executive management.
- Co-managing the budget of the section within approved amounts in a given financial year.
Governance and communication
- Liaise with other trading operations services sections and market sections to ensure all sections perform effectively.
- Timely submission of accurate reports per agreed schedule or frequency.
Client orientation and Customer Focus
- Attend to queries of clients timeously.
Food safety and quality control
- Prevent irresponsible storage of contaminants on the floor (chemical, physical, biological).
- Ensure that ripening and cold stores facilities are always kept clean and hygienic (obtain cleaning schedules from the relevant sections).
- Obtain product chemical residues compliance status reports on top 20 products or all tested products whichever is the greatest, from Assignee responsible for the duties, where applicable.
Appointment requirements
- Minimum Grade 12 or equivalent technical qualification.
- Valid Category B Ammonia Refrigeration Practitioner certification (registered with SAQCC Gas or jurisdictional governing body).
- Minimum 3+ years of relevant working experience in pressurized ammonia systems operation.
- Trade Certificate (Mechanical or Electrical) or relevant technical diploma is advantageous.
- Certified training in [Safe Handling] (such as SARACCA-approved courses).
- Deep understanding of SANS 10147 and OHS Act requirements.
