About the position
Background:
- Wits Health Consortium (Pty) Limited ("WHC") is a wholly-owned Company of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (South Africa) under its Faculty of Health Sciences
- WHC provides Faculty with a legal framework within which to operate the research and other activities necessary to support its academic objectives
- In addition, WHC offers a range of products and services to Academics
Division: Wits Planetary Health Research
Main purpose of the job:
- To oversee the data management of research projects, including designing, implementing and maintaining research databases; ensuring data integrity; and supporting research staff with data extraction, cleaning and reporting
Location:
Key performance areas:
- Provide technical input into research tools and database design
- Develop, configure and maintain research databases and electronic data capture (EDC) systems e.g., REDCap, excel etc.
- Monitor data completeness, consistency, and protocol compliance across studies
- Develop and revise data management plans
- Develop, implement and maintain all data related SOPs
- Quality assurance of all data in accordance with ethical, protocol and GCP requirements and SOPs
- Support preparation of datasets for analysis
- Support development of research protocols
- Develop, define and manage data management related timelines, deliverables and performance metrics
- Assess and forecast research progress and communicate deliverables in terms of study milestones
- Participate in research initiation meetings and/or study team meetings to discuss logistical aspects of studies
- Monitor and evaluate progress of data management for respective projects
- Compile monthly/quarterly/annual progress reports as required
- Oversee the maintenance of participant files and archiving
- Provide ongoing support to data capturers through regular meetings, including reviewing issues with paper or electronic forms, troubleshooting data-entry concerns, and conducting training as needed
- Implement data quality assurance procedures, including routine audits, discrepancy checks, and query resolution
- Raise and resolve data queries with Data Capturers and/or sites
- Monitor data entry for validity and integrity by running data validation reports
- Analyse the results from the quality control activities to ensure that data quality is not put at risk
- Generate routine and ad-hoc data summaries, reports, and dashboards for investigators and stakeholders
- Provide support to relevant project staff and support them in the use of statistical software
- Import and export data between data management software programmes
- Process and produce accurate data reports within required timeframes
Required minimum education and training:
- Post Graduate Degree in Statistics or Computer Science, Master’s in Public Health will be an added advantage
Required minimum work experience:
- 5 years’ experience managing research data in academic, clinical or health related environments
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:
- Experience with designing and building electronic data capture platforms e.g., REDCap
- Experience with data quality reviews or data audits
- Proficiency with statistical software (R, Python, Stata)
- Experience monitoring data quality and integrating data from multiple sources (e.g. questionnaires, personal activity trackers (e.g. fitbits/garmins), pathology results)
