About the position

Job Purpose: To ensure that the decisions and instructions of the Board of Trustees are carried out in line with current legislation, without unnecessary delay. To manage the operations of the scheme and ensure there is a healthy working relationship between the Scheme, its members and services providers. To always act in the best interests of the members of the Scheme. The Principal Officer bares ultimate responsibility for all management functions.

Role and Responsibilities

  • To identify key risk areas and performance indicators of the Scheme and monitors these to ensure effectiveness of the internal control systems.
  • Keeps up to date with legal and legislative requirements as prescribed in the regulations and in the Healthcare landscape.
  • Keep the Board sufficiently and timeously informed of the affairs of the scheme concerning any matter relating to the duties of the Board as stated in section 57(4) of the Medical Schemes Act (131 of 1998)
  • The formulation of policies
  • To ensure efficient administration of the Scheme and deliver an excellent service.
  • In charge of the operations and management of the Scheme's business in accordance with the legislative requirements
  • Management of the relationships between the Council, Board Trustees, service provider and members.
  • Management of all external service providers to the Scheme to ensure sound financial management of the Scheme.
  • Keeping the Board members informed regarding developments in the Healthcare environment.
  • Compliance with all statutory requirements pertaining to the preparation of annual financial statements and all other statutory requirements.
  • The implementation of all Board resolutions.
  • To ensure the carrying out of all duties as necessary for the proper execution of the business of the scheme including, but not limited to, participation in all meetings of the Board, and any other duly appointed committee where attendance is required.
  • Management of all third-party contracts on behalf of the scheme, inter alia, with the appointed administrator, all managed health care companies, and any appointed consultants or service providers

Essential Requirements

  • A post-graduate qualification, preferably in Health sciences, accounting or business management (NQF Level: 8 or equivalent).
  • At least five (5) years executive management experience in the medical scheme /healthcare industry/Clinical Industry.
  • Previous experience as a Principal Officer would be an advantage.
  • Clinical knowledge and experience would be an advantage
  • In depth Knowledge of South African health systems.
  • Sound business acumen and track record.
  • Good knowledge and understanding of legislation applicable to medical schemes including the Medical Schemes Act (131 of 1998).
  • Ability to apply technical and professional knowledge.
  • Able to work remotely and to travel as required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Membership with relevant Recognised Professional body (Optional)
  • Communication skills and Problem solving skills.
  • Judgment and decision-making ability
  • Stakeholder relationship Management skills

Remuneration: Market related within a total cost to company package structure

Work Location: Hybrid (Office and Remote)
