SENIOR MECHANICAL ENGINEER

My client currently has a vacancy for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to be based in Durban.  Reporting to the General Manager Engineering the incumbent will be responsible for heading up the Mechanical Department within Technical Services. This will involve providing a discipline consultative service to all operating entities to obtain optimum performance and compliance with all relevant statutory and corporate governance requirements.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Lead the Mechanical Engineering Department for the Group.
• Maintain, review and develop Mechanical Engineering standards for the Group.
• Participate in technical liaison meetings and technical reviews.
• Provide specialist discipline advice to senior management with regards to operational matters, feasibility studies, cost estimates, project documentation/implementation, equipment selection and ensure compliance with group standards.
• Review production and performance reports and offer technical support to the entities for optimisation in the areas of juice extraction/production, steam and power generation and general utilities.
• Maintain relationships with key service providers to ensure strategic advantage for the Group.
• Ensure statutory compliance by engendering awareness, and conducting relevant surveillance audits on an adhoc basis, in conjunction with the Risk Department.
• Contributes to ongoing development and continuous improvement.
• Keep abreast of changes and discipline best practice and legislation and advise the Group accordingly.

Minimum Manning Specifications

• Tertiary Qualification, either BSc or BTech or National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering
• Government Certificate of Competency (Factories). ECSA Registration would be advantageous.
• Minimum of 10 years experience in a sugar milling environment, of which at least 3 years should have been in a management role.
• Experience in a consulting role, would be advantageous.
• Credibility and confidence to engage with and influence key stakeholders i.e. senior mill management teams, contractors, fellow team members etc.
• Good oral and written communication skills.
• Proficiency in MS office.
• Self driven and able to work independently.
• Committed team player with good interactive skills.
• Ability to anticipate, interpret and respond to changes impacting on functional area.
• Good understanding/feel of the business value chain.
• Must be prepared to travel extensively to all of the clients sites.
