The Company:

The Company is a large organisation in the insurance industry with offices based in all the major cities in the province. This position will be based in the Braamfontein Office in Johannesburg.

Purpose of the Role

  • To formulate a Training and Development Strategy which is aligned with the Groups HR Strategy which in turn is aligned with Group Strategic and Operational Objectives.
  • Ensure effective implementation of the L&D Strategy through effective management of L&D Team, budget, resources, etc
  • Adjust and align roll out and implementation of Strategy in accordance with changes to group and HR strategy.


  • Develop understanding of Group and HR Strategy, Company structures processes and resources.
  • Identify information and other requirements in order to determine strategy.
  • Identify resources, interdependencies, processes and systems-both existing and those required  in order to optimise achievement of L&D objectives.
  • More Specifically……
    • Lead Skills Development in line with relevant legislation.
    • Manage Learning needs analysis and its outcomes-alsoTranslate Group Strategy and Values into specific learning needs
    • Manage Learning programmes both Strategic and those related to specific business initiatives, including
      • CSP
      • Non CSP
      • Leadership Programmes
      • Academic studies and application
      • Insurance and Tertiary
      • FAIS
    • Determine Leadership Development requirements throughout Group.
    • Network externally to determine and introduce best practice re L&D and constant improvement.
    • Manage L&D budget
    • Develop relationships and contractual framework with external providers.
    • Ensure optimal relationships between L&D team and internal clients
    • Leadership and Management of L& D team, including:
      • Performance management
      • Motivation and coaching
      • Succession and career planning
      • Change management
      • Demonstrate and drive living of Company Values.



  • Degree in higher Education. Ideally an honours degree in HR or related Eg BComm HR hons.


  • Min of 7 years experience in Learning and Development, of which at least 3 should have been in management of staff-managing L&D staff who themselves were at management level.
  • Experience in L&D within the insurance industry is a distinct advantage / preferable.

Knowledge and Competencies:

  • Knowledge of adult learning principles and methodologies.
  • SD Legislative framework.
  • Skill requirements and accreditation requirements in insurance or financial services industry-e.g. FAIS, FICA, CBSP.
  • Knowledge of key HR dimensions such as Performance management, Succession planning, Change management.
