About the position

Our client is an independent insurance broker based in Bryanston. They are looking for an experienced technical broker (also sometimes referred to as an internal or back up broker) to join their growing team.

The Job

To provide technical and administrative support to the Account Executive in terms of insurance broking and portfolio management in respect of existing and new clients.


Key Objectives of the Job


1 Financial Management:
1.1 Meets or exceeds annual budget
1.2 Raises invoices correctly and within acceptable timeframes
1.3 Raises premiums correctly and within acceptable timeframes

2 Business Development:
2.1 New business proposals - assists in obtaining underwriting information, sourcing quotes, finalising terms and compiling the new business presentation.


3 Relationships:
3.1 Insurers - develops and maintains relationships with the insurance market
3.2 Clients - develops and maintains relationships with clients
3.3 Colleagues - develop and foster relationships with colleagues


4 Compliance:
4.1 Brand management, alignment and awareness
4.2 Adherence to HFS Operating and Company Policies
4.3 Statutory and Regulatory compliance in order to protect clients and business interests
4.4 Compliance with TCF (Treating Customers Fairly)


5 People, Learning and Growth:
5.1 Marketplace, product and regulatory knowledge - acquire and maintain thorough level as appropriate to the role
5.2 Ability to manage own performance in order to meet deadlines, targets and client expectations.
5.3 Mentoring and coaching of junior staff members


Key Competency Requirements of the Job
Qualifications -
Studying towards Insurance Diploma/Degree OR 
AIISA or similar Diploma with an insurance qualification 
FAIS RE 5 Required
Matric Required
Own Car and SA driver's license 
Experience -
Minimum 5 years experience in corporate insurance broking 
Computer Skills -
CIMS (will train) Expert MS Office: Excel Proficient MS Office: Outlook Proficient
MS Office: PowerPoint Proficient MS Office: Word Proficient
Technical Broking Competencies -
1 Clear understanding of the renewal cycle
2 Preparing the renewal information and declaration document to the client 
3 Create, distribute and follow up on Quote and Placing Slips to insurers 
4 Negotiate and agree policy wordings and endorsements with insurers
5 Be able to issue a bespoke policy wording and endorsements to insurers 
6 Liaise with insurers and clients with regard to opening and closing impairment notices and hot work permits 
7 Raise debit/credit notes on the system in line with the premium summary
8 Ensure credit control is within acceptable timeframes and be proactive in following up on outstanding premiums
9 Liaise with premium finance service providers to obtain client quotes 
10 Follow up with insurers on signed Placing Slips and policy documents 
11 Check and vet policy documentation and provide to the client within the FSCA timelines
12 Attend client meetings and take and produce the minutes thereafter 
13 Strengthen internal communication between underwriting and claims teams 


Technical Claims Competencies -
Claims process - knowledge and understanding 
Possess knowledge and understanding of complex product features, benefits, exclusions, warranties 
Foster regular communication with the claims team 
Other Competencies -
Conversant with all classes of risk 
Knowledge and understanding of the specialist classes of insurance 
Understanding of applicable policy wordings 
Knowledge of the insurance market 
Knowledge and understanding of the legislative and regulatory environment that governs the industry
